Stream for Workers-Alberta Express Entry (AEE) Stream

Alberta Express Entry (AEE) Stream

To be eligible for this stream, applicants must have already submitted their profile through one of the “Federal – Express Entry” online application programs: Canadian Experience Class (CEC), Federal Skilled Worker Program (FSWP), or Federal Skilled Trades Program (FSTP). The Government of Alberta directly nominates applicants to meet the growing job market demand. An additional 600 points are added to their Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) score, almost guaranteeing an invitation to apply for permanent residency in the next Express Entry draw. The Alberta Immigrant Nominee Program (AINP) conducts regular draws from the Federal Express Entry pool, selecting candidates based on specific in-demand occupations. Candidates with ties to Alberta and the necessary skills to contribute to the province’s economic growth may be asked to apply.

Candidates with Express Entry profiles may receive a Notification of Interest (NOI) letter from the Alberta government through the federal system. Invited candidates have a limited time to express their interest in applying to be considered for selection under this stream. If accepted, individuals will be contacted by the Alberta Immigrant Nominee Program (AINP) and asked to upload the required documents through the AAIP web interface.

Minimum Eligibility Requirement

  • Must have an active Express Entry profile in the candidate pool.
  • CRS score must be at least 300.
  • Must express interest in permanently migrating to Alberta.
  • Must have the intention and ability to work and live in Alberta.
  • Employment should contribute to Alberta’s economic growth and diversity.
  • The primary occupation in the federal Express Entry profile should be on the list of in-demand occupations, part of a specific Express Entry stream pathway, or linked to Alberta’s economic, sector, or occupational priorities.
  • The primary occupation should not be on the “Alberta Opportunity Stream Ineligible Occupations” list.

Priorities for NOI's

Based on the profile information available on the Federal Express Entry portal, Alberta can select applicants and then issue a Notification of Interest letter (NOIs) or invitations on the federal Express Entry profile to apply for the Alberta Immigrant Nominee Program (AAIP). Starting this year, the AAIP will issue NOIs based on the following priorities:

The Alberta Immigrant Nominee Program (AAIP) will conduct draws for a minimum of 25% of certificates of nomination in the Alberta Express Entry Stream. Selection parameters include the principal applicant having a Canadian citizen or permanent resident parent, child, or sibling in Alberta, and the primary occupation being in demand in Alberta.

AAIP selects individuals who have experience in occupations that are in demand in Alberta. They employ one or more of the following approaches to determine this:

  1. Considering the occupations with a significant cumulative imbalance according to Alberta’s Occupational Outlook.
  2. Focusing on occupations categorized as ‘High’ or ‘Moderately High’ demand in the Short-Term Employment Forecast.
  3. Specifically targeting occupations in the agriculture, construction, healthcare, or tourism and hospitality sectors.

Priority is given to candidates with a valid job offer from a legitimate business in Alberta.

Family connections are assessed based on the relationship to the principal applicant (in-laws are not eligible). Eligibility is determined by verifiable and supported connections or relationships with the principal applicant (parent, child, or sibling) through essential documents.

AAIP will use 30% of Express Entry allocations in 2023 for category-based selections of individuals:

  • The primary occupation of the worker is a suitable National Occupational Classification (NOC) code.
  •   Have a valid, verified work offer issued by an Alberta employer in the healthcare sector (based on valid Workers’ Compensation Board coverage) within a healthcare job.

  • You must prove that you met the minimum requirements the relevant regulatory body laid out for the right to perform the healthcare profession in Alberta.

The NOC codes are used to define a variety of occupations. AAIP will require additional information from applicants on the position mentioned in the job offer as well as the regulatory agency’s documentation of the ability to perform the health professions that are eligible in Alberta to verify that the applicant is qualified to practice under this route.

Healthcare professions that are eligible under this path and the relevant regulatory agency responsible for the proof of capability for practice in Alberta include:
  • Physicians – College of Physicians and Surgeons of Alberta (CPSA)
  • Registered Nurses (RNs) – College of Registered Nurses of Alberta (CRNA)
  • Licensed Practical Nurses (LPNs) – College of Licensed Practical Nurses of Alberta (CLPNA)
  • Nurse Practitioners (NPs) – College of Registered Nurses of Alberta (CRNA)
  • Physician Assistants – College of Physicians and Surgeons of Alberta (CPSA)
  • Occupational Therapist – Alberta College of Occupational Therapists (ACOT)
  • Physiotherapist – College of Physiotherapist of Alberta (CPA)
  • Clinical Social Worker – Alberta College of Social Workers (ACSW)
  • Psychologist – College of Alberta Psychologists (CAP)
Other Alberta Express Entry Stream selections and streams’ selections will be added to the stream selections that target the specific industry.
Eligible individuals can submit an online form for assessment on the AAIP web portal. If they meet the minimum qualifications, they are invited to apply for provincial nomination. Candidates with a job offer from an approved tech employer in Alberta’s technology industry and who qualify for the Alberta Express Entry stream can take the accelerated pathway. If they meet the stream’s criteria, they will receive an invitation from AAIP to submit the required documents through the online portal. To apply for the Accelerated Tech Pathway, you must:

    • The job offer must meet specific requirements outlined in the assessment criteria.
    • The occupation must be on the list of eligible Accelerated Tech Pathway occupations.
    • The employer must be in the Alberta tech industry, as defined by AAIP’s list of eligible NAICS codes.
    • The base monetary wage or salary must meet provincial minimum wage and other specified criteria.
    • Non-wage compensation, such as company ownership, is not considered part of the base monetary wage or salary.
  • Have valid immigration status (work permit or implied status) if you are already working in Alberta for your Alberta employer at the time of AAIP application.
The following individuals are not eligible for the Accelerated Tech Pathway: – Part-time, casual, or seasonal employees, regardless of their working hours. – Independent contractors or temporary agency workers. – Employees who do not work in Alberta, including those who work online from a location outside Alberta or at a premise outside Alberta. Note: If your Express Entry profile expires in 3 months or less, you may be less likely to be asked to submit an application. It is advisable to keep your Express Entry profile up to date to remain eligible for consideration under the Accelerated Tech Pathway in the future.
  • Candidates in the federal Express Entry pool with profiles related to agriculture, construction, tourism, and hospitality may receive a Notification of Interest letter from Alberta based on their available profile information.
  • In 2023, AAIP plans to allocate 20% of its Express Entry spots for category-based selections focusing on occupations in agriculture, construction, and hospitality and tourism sectors. Priority may be given to candidates with a verifiable job offer from a legitimate business in Alberta or those with in-demand occupations.
  • The selections made for the specific sectors mentioned above will be complemented by selections from other streams and nominations within the Alberta Express Entry Stream.
