Canada Skilled Immigration – Express Entry

Apply for immigration through Express Entry.

The application procedure is for skilled professionals who wish to live permanently in Canada and contribute to its economy. Express Entry is an online system that is used to manage immigration applications from skilled workers.

In January 2015, Canada implemented the Express Entry (EE) system in order to ensure long-term economic growth and to fulfill its future labor market demands. For application submissions, the system employs a two-step online approach. Prospective migrants must first complete and submit an Express Entry profile, after which they will be placed in a selection pool if they match the eligibility criteria.

This is an online application where all the required information is provided on each applicant’s profile, which is then used to score them to apply for a Permanent Residency Visa. Among the factors taken into account are their skills, relevant work experience, English or French language abilities, education, and other factors.

Express Entry is an online government system application in which skilled workers fill up all their required information to show their interest in applying for a permanent residency visa to migrate to Canada. Express Entry is also formally called “Expression of Interest.” This is one of the most popular Canadian immigration programs, wherein skilled workers are chosen based on their skills, experience, and ability to contribute to Canada’s economy. If an applicant is eligible to apply for Express Entry, his or her profile will be accepted to be in the pool of candidates. Applicants will be ranked in the Express Entry pool using a point-based system, which is known as the Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS). Once after receiving an ITA – Invitation to Apply, applicants will have 90 days to submit all the required documents and pay the Visa fee for Permanent Residency Visa to Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC). Most of the provinces and territories also recruit applicants from the Express Entry pool through the Provincial Nominee Program (PNP) to meet local labor market needs.

Express Entry Eligibility and Requirements

Navigating Express Entry eligibility can be daunting, but here are the essentials:
  • Express Entry, managed by Citizenship and Immigration Canada (CIC), facilitates permanent residency applications via federal economic immigration programs like the Federal Skilled Workers Program (FSWP), Federal Skilled Trades Program (FSTP), and Canada Experience Class (CEC).
  • Eligibility criteria vary per program, but generally, applicants must intend to reside in Canada outside Quebec and meet program-specific requirements.
  • Competitiveness is high, with candidates ranked using the Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS). Factors like age, education, language proficiency, work experience, and adaptability influence rankings.
  • For FSWP, applicants need at least 67 out of 100 points, focusing on work experience, education, language proficiency, adaptability, and arranged employment.
  • FSTP applicants must have two years of full-time work experience in a skilled trade within the past five years, with minimum language ability scores and a job offer or certification from a Canadian authority.
  • CEC is for candidates with Canadian work experience, requiring a minimum language proficiency level, one year of skilled work experience in Canada within the last three years, and adherence to NOC standards.
  • Understanding these criteria and preparing accordingly is crucial for successful Express Entry applications.

Express Entry Process

If you are eligible for one of the programs listed above, you can also apply for the Provincial Nominee Program (PNP) through Express Entry. If you are nominated from any of the provinces in Canada, you will receive additional points and will be requested to apply as soon as possible.

Maintenance Funds (Proof of Funds)

If you are invited to apply for Express Entry then you must have written proof that you have the money required for you and any family members you intend on bringing to Canada. Applicants must also have access to sufficient maintenance funds for themselves and their family members, and must be able to prove this with bank statements or other relevant supporting documents. The amount of funds applicants must have access to depend upon the number of family members included in the application.  You must get official or formal letters from any banks or financial organisations where you hold funds as proof.

Letter(s) must
  • be printed on the letterhead of the banking institution
  • include their contact evidence as address, telephone number and official email address
  • include your name
  • list all outstanding bills, including credit card and loan balances
  • Add the following information for each existing bank and investment account:
    • account numbers
    • each account’s start date, i.e. the commencement date of each account
    • each account’s current balance
    • last 6 months average balance

The following table gives a detailed breakdown of the funds required for this visa: You can look up the relevant exchange rate at Currency Convertor.

Calculating Express Entry Points to Compute a CRS Score

The Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) is the points-based system of the Express Entry online application that considers the precise score of an applicant’s profile to rank them in the Express Entry pool. This was introduced in Jan’2015 along with the Express Entry online system to process  applications for Federal Economic Immigration Programs.

The points are calculated out of a total 1,200, which consists of a “core set of human capital factors” of points up to 600 and a set of “additional factors” of points up to 600. In the core set of human capital factors, the points are calculated based on the applicants’ skills and experience factors, spouse or common-law partner factors, i.e., their language skills and education, and skills transferability, including education and work experience. And in “Additional Factors,” points are calculated based on Canadian degrees, diplomas, or certificates; a valid job offer; a nomination from a province or territory; a brother or sister living in Canada who is a citizen or permanent resident; and strong French language skills. While  creating a profile in their Express Entry online account, the system automatically computes and assigns the applicant a CRS score based on the information provided in their profile, which can be seen on the Application Dashboard/Profile Details page of their account. Later on, the top-ranked applicants are issued an Invitation to Apply (ITA) at the time of a round of invitations from the Express Entry pool.

There is a certain number of points that can be earned in each area below as per your profile credentials. The majority of the points granted are determined by your age, degree of education, and whether or not you have a spouse or common law partner.

  • Core Factors: The five sub-categories that follow are the most fundamental, core factors which comprise the majority of the ranking procedure for each individual.
    • When it comes to age, most of the individuals may score a maximum 100 points (with a spouse or common-law partner) or 110 points (without a spouse or common-law partner).
    • The maximum number of points you may receive for your education level is 150, which applies to a university-level certification at the Doctoral level and without a spouse or common-law partner and with spouse, you’d receive 140.
    • The maximum number of points granted for First Official Language proficiency ability subcategories is 32 (with a spouse or common-law partner) or 34 (without a spouse or common-law partner) (without a spouse or common-law partner).
    • For second official language proficiency, the maximum number of points being 22/24.
    • Canadian work experience for five years or more, you can earn up to 70 points (with a spouse/common-law partner) or 80 points (without a spouse/common-law partner).

  • Skill Transferability Factors

    • To receive the maximum 50 points, you must have a CLB 9 or above in your official language proficiency and the highest degree of schooling with two or more post-secondary education programme credentials, at least one of which lasting three years or longer.

  • Spouse or common-law aspects (if applicable)

    • Level of Education points are assigned with the highest-level categories are Master’s Degree university level and Doctoral level university certification, both worth 10 points.

    • Your spouse/common-law partner can be given and contribute up to five points for each subcategory of Official Languages Proficiency, with a maximum score of 20 points.

    • The maximum points, your spouse/common-law partner, can be granted and contribute to you for Canadian Work Experience is 10, which applies to five years or more of Canadian work experience.
