The 190 visa is a points-based permanent visa for skilled workers nominated by an Australian state or territory government. This is a temporary and short-term visa for qualified and skilled workers who wish to live and work in regional Australia. Those with this visa can stay for up to 5 years, apply for permanent residence after 3 years, and apply for Australian citizenship. This visa cannot be extended.
However, you must qualify for this point-based 190 visa by having a relevant occupation on the skilled occupation (STSOL) list and satisfying the necessary skill levels specified to work in an eligible occupation in any designated region of Australia.
To be able to submit a valid application for this visa, you need to first submit an Expression of Interest through SkillSelect. You can do this in or outside Australia. If you are nominated by a state, territory, or relative and meet the basic requirements for this visa, you will then receive an invitation to apply.

Eligibility to apply for a Subclass 190 Visa
- You must be nominated by an Australian state government agency for this subclass 190 visa. Nonetheless, a state government agency has its own standards for deciding the nomination of talented employees and overseas graduates, but it must also ensure that these potential 190 visa applicants fit the requirements of the Department of Home Affairs.
- When you are invited to apply for the Australia subclass 190 visa, you must be under the age of 45.
- Your genuine interest and commitment to staying and working in a particular state on a long-term settlement basis are very important.
- You should have a relevant occupation and it must be available on one of the two skilled occupation lists, i.e., the Medium and Long-term Strategic Skills List (MLTSSL) or the Short-term Skilled Occupation List (STSOL), which also give information about the occupations along with the assessing authority.
- You must get your skills evaluated by the appropriate skill assessment authority. Some careers may require work experience, so you must check for it and certify that you have it. The applicable occupation’s skills evaluation should have been completed within three years of the invitation date.
- You must be competent in English and have one of the following test results to verify it:
- IELTS (International English Language Testing System) with a minimum score of 6 in each of the four exam sections (listening, speaking, reading, and writing).
- OET (Occupational English Test) with at least a ‘B’ in each of the four sections of the test.
- TOEFL – iBT (Test of English as a Foreign Language – Internet-based Test) with a minimum of 12, 13, 21, and 18 for listening, reading, writing, and speaking.
- Pearson Test of English (PTE) Academic with a minimum score of 50 in each of the four sections.
- Cambridge English Advanced English (CAE), with a minimum exam score of 169 in each of the speaking, reading, listening, and writing sections.
- Must fill up the required details to lodge and submit an Expression of Interest (EOI) through Skillselect.
- Both you and your family must fulfill the requirements for health, i.e., medical clearance certificate (MCC), and character standards, i.e., Police Clearance Certificate (PCC).
- You must have repaid any outstanding debts to the Australian government.
- As a points-tested visa, you must score at least 65 points to qualify. However,you can obtain 5 extra points if you apply through 190 visas .
- You should receive an “invitation to apply” for the Subclass 190 Visa Australia.
- International students whose abilities are assessed based on an Australian qualification while on a student visa must have that qualification from a CRICOS-registered course.
- Furthermore, there is no standard processing time for this visa and each visa is assessed on a case-by-case basis.
